The Balancing Effect: The Influence of pH on Chronic Wound Healing

This HMP Education CME course discusses how pH plays a powerful role in wound healing. Healthy skin is slightly acidic (around pH 4–6), which inhibits bacteria and supports barrier function. When a wound becomes alkaline (pH >7), bacterial growth, protease activity, and inflammation increase, slowing tissue repair. Acidic environments, in contrast, promote oxygen release, collagen formation, and reduced enzymatic breakdown—accelerating closure and lowering infection risk. Monitoring and restoring an optimal acidic microenvironment can therefore be a decisive step in improving healing outcomes.
